PASSED: Gallego Fentanyl Policy Included in Senate NDAA
PHOENIX, AZ — Today, the U.S. Senate passed an anti-fentanyl money laundering policy pushed by Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03) as part of their version of the fiscal year (FY) 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The provision was introduced in the House by Rep. Gallego as the Buck Stops Here Act.
Statement from Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03)
“Fentanyl continues to take a devastating toll on Arizona families and communities. I applaud the Senate for passage of this policy which will disrupt the flow of fentanyl across our border by hitting traffickers where it hurts – their bank accounts,” said Rep. Gallego. “The policy from my Buck Stops Here Act is now one step closer to becoming law. Next, I look forward to seeing it pass in the House with my leadership.”
The Buck Stops Here Act seeks to reduce the impact of the fentanyl epidemic by authorizing the U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to designate financial institutions, transaction classes, or accounts as primary money laundering concerns in connection to illicit fentanyl trafficking.
As a House Armed Services Committee leader, Rep. Gallego secured two House NDAA provisions to examine the Defense Department’s role in helping end the epidemic.
Now that House and Senate NDAAs have passed, the chambers will go to conference to resolve the differences.
