Congressman Ruben Gallego on Women’s History Month
Washington, DC – Congressman Ruben Gallego released the following statement commemorating Women's History Month:
"During the month of March we celebrate Women's History Month and the endless contributions of women to our country throughout history and today.
"As we celebrate how far we've come in ensuring equal rights for women in the United States, we can't forget the sacrifices and challenges that women still face in our country today - including the ongoing battle for equal pay and the fight for women's access to healthcare.
"Currently, women make up almost half of America's workforce and are increasingly the breadwinners in households across the country. But women still make only 77 cents to every dollar a man working in the same job does — with African American women make 64 cents and Latinas make 56 to every dollar earned by a Caucasian man in the same job. And many still believe that government has the right to interfere in a woman's healthcare decisions.
"The fight for equal rights in the United States isn't over. This March let's celebrate women's contributions and accomplishments – from the women's suffrage movement to the heroic work of women in our military, in business, education, technology and public service – and let's reflect on the work that is still ahead of us. We are forever indebted to women who fought and paved the way, and we must continue working to achieve full equality for women at home and in the workplace."
