Rep. Gallego Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision to Protect Dreamers

PHOENIX, AZ – Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's ruling against President Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

"In reversing President Trump's decision to end DACA, the Supreme Court affirmed today what we already knew: The Trump Administration is both incompetent and incredibly cruel. In today's decision, the Court shines the light on another of Trump's decisions that was made for purely political reasons with the worst of intentions and effects. The Court called him out on that, and Trump's blindness to his own arbitrary cruelty became his downfall.

"Now that the Supreme Court has spoken, the Trump Administration should immediately reopen both initial DACA applications and renewal applications for all who qualify for the program as it stood in 2012.

"I will not stop working until these young Americans, who have established businesses, started families, purchased homes, served in our armed forces, and are saving lives on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, can permanently call the only country they have ever known ‘home.'

"Today's decision makes it clear that Congress must provide permanent protection from deportation. Over a year ago, the House passed the American Dream and Promise Act to shield DREAMers and TPS holders from deportation and to create a path to legal status. Mitch McConnell must stop using immigrants as political pawns and immediately allow a vote on that bill in the Senate.

"In the meantime, I will celebrate today's decision with immigrant families and their friends and neighbors across the country who know that they are here to stay."
