Rep. Gallego Statement on Protests in Chile

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) issued the following statement:

"I am extremely concerned about the violence and protests occurring in Chile. Chile's democratization and progress on civil- and human rights over recent decades has been one of the great success stories in Latin America. The history of Chile shows that its leaders and people must not allow a return to violence and lawlessness, despite legitimate grievances. I urge the government, protestors, and security services to exercise great discretion and do their utmost to preserve human life as this situation develops.

"I am also disappointed that the Trump Administration is failing to pressure the Chilean government to respond to this situation appropriately. The United States must always stand for the preservation of human- and civil rights, and this episode is no different. I urge Secretary Pompeo and the rest of the Administration to work to ensure that the United States' interests – including a just and peaceful Chile – are advanced at every stage during this process."
