Rep. Gallego Statement on the Insurrection and Attempted Coup Delaying Counting of the Electoral College Vote
Washington, DC – Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) released the following statement:
"Today, domestic terrorists – instigated by a President unhinged from reality – attacked our government and the duly elected representatives of the American people. In spite of this attack, the House will reconvene tonight to continue our constitutionally mandated work to certify the election and uphold our democracy.
"After completing this duty, Congress must take further steps to secure our democracy. Those who participated in today's insurrection must be prosecuted. President Trump and the Republicans in Congress who conspired today to overturn the results of our democratic election must be held accountable by Congress on behalf of the American people.
"One of the most sacred parts of the oath I took when I enlisted in the Marines was to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I always thought that I would only have to fight to defend that oath in warzones overseas – not on the floor of the U.S. Capitol.
"As we move on from this dark day in American history, we will do our duty to the American people and begin the long, hard work of restoring our democracy in the wake of President Trump's four year effort to destroy it.
"President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will take office on January 20th. I look forward to working with them to ensure that this never happens again."
