Rep. Gallego Selected to Chair New Armed Services Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the House Armed Services Committee selected Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-07) to Chair its new Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations (ISO).

The new subcommittee will have jurisdiction over Department of Defense (DoD) policy and programs and accounts related to military intelligence, national intelligence, countering weapons of mass destruction, counter-proliferation, counter-terrorism, other sensitive military operations, and special operations forces.

Rep. Gallego is the highest ranking person of color serving on the House Armed Services Committee.

Rep. Gallego released the following statement:

"DoD intelligence organizations and special operations forces play a critical role in protecting our country and its interests. The civilian intelligence professionals and uniformed special operators that my subcommittee oversees possess the most elite skills in the world and protect the nation by collecting and analyzing valuable intelligence information and by carrying out the most difficult, high-end operations in the most austere and dangerous battlefields on earth. I am honored to serve as Chairman of the subcommittee overseeing their service to the nation.

"The United States also faces national security threats from weapons of mass destruction and the proliferation of weapons around the world. It will be my duty and honor as Chairman of this subcommittee to ensure that Congress does its part in providing the resources and oversight necessary to those who wish to attack our country with such weapons, or provide them to terrorists. It is more important than ever that we support our intelligence, counter-terrorism, and weapons interdiction efforts to protect ourselves from those who intend to do us harm.

"I look forward to serving as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, and look forward to working with my colleagues to provide for the common defense in this arena."
