Rep. Gallego Applauds the Passage of H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021
WASHINGTON, DC—Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) applauded the House of Representatives' passage of H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021. The bill includes a key provision proposed by Rep. Gallego and Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) that restores Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
"At a time when state legislatures across the country are moving to dismantle our sacred right to vote, I'm proud of today's passage of H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021, to push back against their attacks on our democracy," said Rep. Ruben Gallego. "We have witnessed baseless attempts over the last two decades to undermine our voting process and target Black and brown voters with racist voter suppression laws. And these attacks have accelerated in 2021. That's why H.R. 4's inclusion of my and Rep. Mondaire Jones' provision to restore Voting Rights Act Section 2 protections for voters of color is so important. I will never stop fighting for the voting rights of all Americans."
In July, following the Supreme Court's decision in Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee, Jones introduced the Inclusive Elections Act with Rep. Gallego to restore Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act so that any voter suppression law will once again be illegal if it disparately burdens people of color or linguistic minorities.
