Rep. Gallego Announces Over $200M in Funding for Sky Harbor International Airport from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-07) proudly announced over $200 million in new federal funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), otherwise known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is headed to Arizona to make much-needed improvements to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which lies within Arizona’s 7th District, over the next five years.

“With the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this Congress and the Biden Administration are bringing transformational infrastructure investments to Arizona. Over $40 million per year for Sky Harbor and millions more for other Arizona airports means good-paying jobs for Arizonans and air travel improvements that will benefit Arizona for decades to come,” said Rep. Gallego. “We are witnessing just the beginning of the $7.3 billion Arizona will receive from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. I will not stop fighting for more funding, jobs, and infrastructure projects our community needs and deserves to build back a better Arizona.”

“Without the Bipartisan Infrastructure law, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport would be delayed in making important airfield improvements,” said Phoenix Director of Aviation Services, Chad Makovsky.  “This funding will put Arizonans to work in quality, high-paying jobs and ultimately improve the passenger experience.”

On November 5, the House of Representatives passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, sending it to President Biden’s desk. This transformative legislation includes a grand total of $15 billion in formula funding to help redevelop airports across the country. Current projections show Sky Harbor could receive $216 million of this funding over 5 years, averaging about $43 million per year.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport and Glendale Municipal Airport, both serving 7th District constituents, could receive $22,698,465 and $1,480,000, respectively. These funds can be used for a broad variety of projects including improvements to runways and taxiways, terminal development, and noise prevention. The City of Phoenix plans to use part of this funding on a new north-south taxiway on the west side of the Airport, which will improve efficiency and get passengers to their gates more quickly.

Arizona airports are also eligible for additional competitive grant funding for Terminal Development, which the City of Phoenix plans to utilize to compete for funding to add a second north concourse to Terminal 3 and a post-security walkway between Sky Harbor’s two terminals. The law also includes an additional $5 billion nationally for FAA towers and facilities funding, which the FAA will distribute among airports in need.
