Rep. Gallego on the 50th Anniversary of the Launch of Head Start

WASHINGTON – Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the launch of Head Start. In these 50 years, Head Start has served over 30 million children and their families across the country – promoting school readiness of young children from low-income families, and providing services that are essential to children's early development.

Just in 2014, Head Start served close to 1 million people nationwide and over 7,000 people in Maricopa County alone.

Congressman Ruben Gallego released the following statement:

"Education is the most important thing we can provide our children in order to help them succeed. From early childhood education to college, affordable and accessible education is essential.

"For 50 years, Head Start has helped provide equal access to quality education for our children and it is disappointing that many Republicans want to cut this program. Rather than cutting funding for Head Start, we should be investing in America's children and helping set them up for success.

"Let's not jeopardize the future of America's children. I call on my Republican colleagues to abandon their plan to cut funding for Head Start, and join us in working to close the education gap in America."
