Gallego Votes to Lower Costs and Power American Research and Manufacturing
WASHINGTON, DC –Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-07) voted to pass H.R. 4346, the CHIPS and Science Act. The bold, bipartisan package makes new investments in research, innovation, and American manufacturing. Already passed by the Senate, the CHIPS and Science Act now heads directly to the President’s desk.
“The strength of the American economy is our ability to innovate and create, but over the past few decades, we have seen foreign nations catch up,” said Rep. Gallego. “Thanks to the hard work of Congress, today we came together to invest in the research capabilities and the education of a STEM-forward workforce. This is a win for Arizona and its workers, and I thank Senator Mark Kelly for his leadership in getting this bill done.”
Rep. Gallego fought for provisions in the CHIPS and Science Act that will benefit Arizona, which include:
- $52 billion in federal financial assistance to incentivize investment in facilities in the U.S. for semiconductor fabrication, assembly, testing or advance research and development;
- $2 billion for the America Defense Fund that will, among other investments, create a national network for onshore, university-based prototyping of semiconductor technologies and semiconductor workforce training
- $81 billion for the National Science Foundation to back scientific research and development critical to America’s economic development and national defense;
- $13 billion to fund STEM education with an emphasis on creating opportunities for rural and underrepresented communities alongside specific investment in STEM training at minority serving institutions (MSIs); and
- Supporting research into next-generation energy storage, solar, hydrogen, critical minerals, and more to combat climate change through the Office of Science.
