Gallego Votes Against a Total Ban on TikTok

WASHINGTONRep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03), today voted against H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which would force TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to divest its ownership stake in the app or face removal from U.S. app stores.

“As the ranking member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, I know all too well the threat China poses here at home — banning TikTok and limiting the freedoms of Arizonans before exploring other options is not the answer. It's vital we find a balance that both protects our national security interests and respects our fundamental rights. This is not that,” said Rep. Gallego.

As the ranking member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, Rep. Gallego’s record on China speaks for itself. He’s introduced legislation to counter the Chinese Communist Party’s influence in Latin America, secured provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act to compel the Defense Department to write a report on China-Russia defense coordination, and worked to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the U.S. and Taiwan, just to name a few examples.
