PHOENIX, AZ – Rep. Ruben Gallego travelled to Nogales, and Sierra Vista, Arizona yesterday where he toured the Mariposa Port of Entry, met with the Santa Cruz County Port Authority, hosted a veterans’ roundtable in Sierra Vista, and toured local water projects in Cochise County.
“Bolstering Arizona’s economy, funding drought mitigation efforts and infrastructure projects, and passing the PACT Act are just some of the key wins Congress delivered for Arizonans in the past year, and it was great to meet with folks in Santa Cruz and Cochise counties to discuss how these victories will impact them,” said Rep. Gallego. “I appreciate all the officials and community leaders in southern Arizona who I met with today, and I promise to keep the dialogue open as we work together to improve our ports to grow our state’s economy, address the water crisis, and build a better Arizona.”
Rep. Gallego began the visit touring the Mariposa Port of Entry to examine how U.S. Customs and Border Protection processes commercial and pedestrian border crossings and plans to modernize the port. Rep. Gallego met with CBP officials and received an operational overview of crossings and a status update on the modernization efforts. He then held a meeting with the officials and community leaders representing the Santa Cruz County Port Authority.
In Sierra Vista, Rep. Gallego held a veterans’ roundtable meeting to discuss recent congressional victories including the Honoring our PACT Act, which allows veterans exposed to toxic exposure and other wartime injuries to get the care they deserve.
Rep. Gallego then met with the Public Works Director for the City of Sierra Vista, and other community stakeholders, on Effluent Recharge projects and federal efforts to improve drought mitigation. Rep. Gallego concluded the day with a tour of the Palominas Flood Control and Recharge Project with representatives from Cochise County and the Cochise Conservation and Recharge Network to discuss groundwater recharge projects and stormwater infrastructure.
