Gallego Statement on the Senate Failing to Pass Critical Voting Rights Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-07) today released the following statement in response to the Senate failing to advance legislation to protect the voting rights of Americans.

“The Senate’s failure to protect voting rights tonight is nothing short of dangerous to our democracy. There are no excuses. As part of a nationwide Republican legislature-led movement to restrict voting rights, Arizona’s governor signed three new voter suppression laws last year, our Attorney General defended two voter suppression laws before the Supreme Court, and the state legislature has already filed over a dozen voter suppression bills for the new 2022 legislative session.

“The rights of all Arizonans are on the line with this vote, but these voter suppression efforts have especially harmed Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American communities across the country and in our state. Congress cannot stand idly by while Republicans driven by the Big Lie, conspiracy theories, and misinformation attack our democracy. The Senate must do whatever it takes to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021. The filibuster has to go.”
