Gallego Meets with the Central Arizona Water Conservation District

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03) met with members of the Central Arizona Water Conservation District (CAWCD), the 15-member board serving Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties that oversees the 336-mile-long canal that brings water from the Colorado River to Central and Southern Arizona. The group discussed the ongoing negotiations concerning Arizona’s water allocation from the Colorado River Basin.

“Our state’s Water Conservation District has shown strong leadership in negotiations to ensure Arizona gets the Colorado River water it deserves,” said Rep. Gallego. “It was great to hear directly from them today on how the negotiations are proceeding. I look forward to staying in contact and continue doing my part to keep Arizona’s water in Arizona.”

The meeting underscores Rep. Gallego’s continued commitment to protecting Arizona from further water allocation cuts. 

He recently visited Mohave County, where he met with officials from the Bureau of Reclamation, local officials, and business leaders to discuss the Western water crisis.

Rep. Gallego is a long-time leader on Arizona water issues and joined the House Natural Resources Committee Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries this Congress. He has introduced legislation to prevent Arizona’s groundwater from exploitation by foreign governments and to encourage the use of smart water technologies. 

Additionally, he has touted Arizona’s voluntary water conservation efforts and called on neighboring states to do the same.
