Gallego Junk Fee Provision Passes GOP-Controlled House to Crack Down on Hidden “Resort” Fees
House overwhelmingly passes key provision contained in Rep. Gallego’s Junk Fee Prevention Act, putting $3.3 billion back in the pockets of American Families
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03) cheered the House passage of a provision of his Junk Fee Prevention Act to crack down on hidden "resort" fees charged by hotels. H.R. 6543 passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. Today's vote follows passage in May of a similar Rep. Gallego provision prohibiting junk fees in event ticket sales.
"Too many families have been there - you book a hotel at one price, but when you check out, you're hit with hidden fees that cause the cost of your stay to skyrocket. Today, the House finally passed my provision to crack down on this price-gouging and provide clarity and cost-saving for Arizona families," said Rep. Gallego. "But it's not just hotels that are abusing hidden junk fees. I'll keep fighting to fully pass my Junk Fee Prevention Act and put an end to hidden junk fees across the board."
If made law, the provision passed today would prohibit misleading or dishonest price advertising of short-term accommodations, requiring that lodging providers and third-party seller provide only accurate and comprehensive price listings that include all mandatory fees.
Today's legislation is just one provision of Rep. Gallego's Junk Fee Prevention Act, which he introduced last year. The bill seeks to increase transparency by requiring the full prices of services to be provided upfront and eliminating the excessive fees that cost Americans billions of dollars each year.
The bill would also eliminate hidden fees in other sectors, including prohibiting charging airline passengers for seating assignments when an adult needs to sit next to an accompanying child and eliminating certain cancellation fees when somebody is trying to cancel their phone or internet plan.
