Congressman Gallego Statement on the One Year Anniversary of the Murder of George Floyd

PHONEIX, AZ – Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-07) released the following statement on the one year anniversary of George Floyd's murder and the fatal shooting of Dion Johnson in Arizona:

"On the one year anniversary of the murders of George Floyd and Dion Johnson, my thoughts are with their families and loved ones, and with the families and loved ones of too many other Black Americans whose lives have been stolen.

"The nationwide protests last summer sparked a renewed national movement to combat police brutality and dismantle systemic racism – but much work remains to be done. We must tackle racial injustice and police abuse head-on, and we must fight for the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act that passed the House of Representatives earlier this year. While I'm encouraged by the recent guilty verdict in Derek Chauvin's trial for the murder of George Floyd, we must make sure that true accountability is the rule, and not the rare exception.

"Signing major reforms into law and transforming the culture of law enforcement in America is a matter of life and death, especially for Black and Brown communities. We cannot stop fighting until we achieve true racial justice in our country."
